Rawicz & Landauer add Liszt-style
flourishes, and make many changes to the harmony.
The Halstead recording is available at www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/4552255-in-a-persian-market-by-ketelbey-mp3
Staab’s performance can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMtoSfRmAXk
The Unika
roll is for piano with a set of organ pipes imitating violin.
Gardner plays only the Princess theme; he
also accompanies Diane di Stasio in a vocal version on the same CD

There may be confusion over
Reginald Foort’s 1926 version. The World Records
transfer seems to be of a different take on the same day. The label of ER 24 gives the matrix as 09384,
but WorldCat has CR 651-1.

Cerbella |
Clean, musical performance
on modern electronic instrument. |
|
Ellsasser |
The camel train moves at
express pace, and the Princess arrives and departs ringing a bicycle bell.
The organ uses a device called
a Dynamic Accentor, which makes the loud passages quite painful. |

Fischer |
Straight and tasteful
performance |
http://archive.org/details/78_p-et-persisk-marked_ernst-fischer-a-w-ketelbey_gbia7007456a |
Foort 1926 |
Controlled
performance. Swell box dynamics
uneven. Cuts Caliph. Lacks final loud chord. |
https://archive.org/details/78_in-a-persian-market_reginald-foort-ketelbey_gbia7002757a |
Foort 1952 |
The camel music is
unusually phrased, the Caliph has two organ ranks out of sync., and the final
loud chord is omitted |
|
Griffiths |
Confused sound, often
played a little too fast for the organist's ability. Cuts Caliph. |
|
Hooghuis Organ |
Phrasing sometime
disjointed. Drum often too loud. |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXYJ870RyRo |
Maclean |
Many cuts, only lasts
2’44". Bleating tremolo for
Princess theme. Cuts Caliph. Fast
passages rushed. |

Mammoth Gavioli
Organ |
Recorded in 2006, sounds as
though some maintenance is due. |
|
Marengi Organ |
Changes a few melody notes,
but otherwise a lovely performance by a mechanical organ. |
|
Moe |
Some unexpected
accompanying harmony, as though the left hand didn’t know what it was
doing. The rhythm of the camels is
almost 6/8, the Jugglers can’t hardly be heard above the accompaniment, and
the Caliph skips along. |
|
Montalba |
Played very rhythmically,
helped by good percussion stops. |
|
Syldmark |
Caliph
music cut. The tempo is uneven. The piece ends with a quiet gong. |
|
Varhelyi |
With
rhythmic accompaniment |
|
Lew White (Aeolian roll) |
Very slow, deliberate
performance. With a few extra notes, and much glissandi in the Princess
theme. Lacks final loud chord. |
