Unlike orchestras and bands, who generally play the dots as the composer
intended, organists tend to treat the music as an opportunity to display their
own imagination. Whether in church or
cinema, they have a long tradition of improvisatioin. Unfortunately, having little need to fit in
with other musicians, some develop sloppy rhythm.

His “Ketelby Selection” omits the Kyrie section |
|
Crawford |
Extra 2 bars at beginning. Much portamento.
Accompaniment changed. Just two
statements of main theme plus final cadence |
|
Culp |
Large pipe organ. Very slow, with noticeable breaks to change
registration. Convincing bell sounds.
Final chord lasts.an age. |

Ellsasser |
The sound is very bright Very slow, some
re-harmonisation. Organ used to the
full, with imagination. 4 extra bars of excited crescendo added after Kyrie.
Semitone key shift. Final chord has added 6th. |

Bird call consists of arpeggios. Kyrie is white noise. |
|
Foort (1926) |
Well-phrased, but the sound is sometimes
unbalanced. Too much tremulant. |

The rhythm is very unstable, with excessive
rubato. |
|
Hazelton |
Fine interpretation, with sensitive phrasing. Ends loud. Pity there's a wrong note in one
of the final chords. |

Continuous tremulant apart from Kyrie section. Much rubato, sounds out of control. Ends
loud.. |

Very slow. With male voice quartet, who sing "Christe eleison"
second time round. Impressive
crescendo through coda, but ending with diminuendo as marked.. |

Part of a medley |

Moe |
Poor rhythmic control, and some notes lost
entirely. Too much tremulant. New countermelody added to Kyrie. Ending abbreviated |

Colourful instrument, but in reverberant
acoustic. Uncontrolled rubato. Ends loud. |

Pattman (Christ Church) |
Complete. The registration is sometimes odd,
with left-hand accompanying semiquavers drowning out the right-hand melody |
(part 1) https://archive.org/details/78_15320-In-a-monastery-garden-part-4
(part 2) https://archive.org/details/78_15319-In-a-monastery-garden-part-2
|
Pattman (Liberal Synagogue) |
With cuts. Very loud tinny bell |
|
Seal |
Plays the music straight, but his rhythm is sometimes disturbed by
different stops speaking slowly.
Choice of registration occcasionally allows the harmony to obscure the
melody. Phrase ends are rushed unless a change of
stop is needed. One stop sounds like
white noise. Final few bars very loud |

One of the earliest electric recordings of a

Colourful organ, with good use of quiet
registrations. Changes take a long time. Bell out of tune. |

Amarillie Ackermann |
A beautiful instrument
accompanied by an ugly backing. Wordless mixed chorus. |
|
Aston Banjos |
Cut. Strumming sounds like
a swarm of insects. With bird calls. |
|
Bill Barron |
Jazz version, with extended
solos for trumpet & sax which seem to have no reference to the original,
which perhaps is in the almost inaudible piano? |
|
Cool Candys |
Well phrased over constant
drumming. Bird calls possibly real
recording? |
|
Dales & Smart |
Cut. Hawaiian guitar puts

Francis Goya |
Guitar stutters a few
times. |
|
Kurt Jarnberg |
Trumpet has much vibrato, and
is far closer to the microphone than the organ. Drums have a constant
patter. Just the main theme and minor
episode, played very slowly. |
|
Herb Kern, Lloyd Sloop,
Bill Markas |
With cuts. A few changes to
harmony. Starts with the Kyrie theme on bells. Key change near the end. Ends
with discordant bells... |
|
Pal Joey Lewis |
Calypso arrangement, with
constant percussion. New introduction reminiscent of The Holy City. Melody shared between choral brass and a
Hammond organ. |
|
Tore Ljøkjel |
Beautifully
phrased, but sounds bare without accompaniment. Joined by two chaffinches for
final section. |
|
The Neal & Massy band |
Public performance, with a
few unscripted squeaks. Balance favours the melody, almost to the exclusion
of accompanying harmony. |
|
Willard Ringstrand’s
ensemble |
Much rubato. Starts with
Kyrie. With men's chorus and a few bird calls. |
|
Lennington H. Shewell |
Unable to play wide melodic
leaps, in first two bars etc. Omits minor section. |
|
The Streaplers |
Rock version, consisting of
just the main theme and minor episode. Wordlesss
singing near the end. |

With out-of-tune
piano. Lovely tenor voice. |
|
Hubert Eisdell
(1922) |
With small orchestra and
men's chorus. |
|
Hubert Eisdell
(1928) |
Orchestra and chorus larger
than 1922 version. The rhythm of the
main melody is sung snappily (over-dotted). |
|
Kauko Käyho |
With small orchestra, some
new arrangement. Very deliberate bass
soloist, chorus (4 voices?) rather harsh tone. |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prPfQsjOJBk |
Viktor Klimenko |
New arrangement with large
orchestra without brass. Kyrie section
replaced by the Russian folksong Vechernyi
Zvon (The Evening Bell). Reprise sung in high falsetto. |
|
Reino Lauanne |
Re-scored for modern small
orchestra. The minor section from the original orchestral version replaces
the Kyrie, and the recording ends after the first reprise. Rich bass voice. |
|
Oscar Natzke/Natzka |
With large orchestra.
Dreary-sounding men's chorus. Stunning
bass voice. |
|
Fred Waring |
Tenor accompanied by
humming chorus and piano.
Extraordinarily wide rubato. Kyrie section sung in new arrangement for
SATB. Reprise started with men on
melody. Builds to large climax in coda, but ends with sharp diminuendo. |

Leo Eider |
Whistling alternates between the written melody (with flute -like
ornaments) and random fragments of fantasy bird calls. |
|
Tormod Borgen Rogne |
He copies Ronalde's interpretation, but with less variety in the
bird song. |
|
Ronnie Ronalde |
Whistles the melody, then
adds some decoration reminiscent of a nightingale. |
|
Mary Schneider |
Her yodelled version has
provoked widely differing emotions, from “sincere delivery” to “you cannot
help but laugh uncontrollably”. Her
backing chorus is ragged and mundane. Each of the six sections of this
arrangement (including the main theme from Sanctuary of the Heart) is sung in a different key. |
|
Seitsemän
Seinähullua Veljestä |
Comedy dialogue
over jazz version, with singing. |
