KETÈLBEY’S
MUSIC USED IN FILMS
Ketèlbey was working in the cinema from as early as
1910, when he was director of the orchestra at the Empire Cinema, Kingston upon
Thames. He compiled two collections of
very short piano pieces for use to accompany silent films – Kinemamusic and New Moving Picture Music.
The latter was later orchestrated in the Bosworth’s Loose-Leaf Film-Play Music series, with six additional
pieces. They were the most popular music
of their type, and for a while gave Ketèlbey
the highest income of any British composer.
In the era of sound movies, his music was sometimes
used as part of the soundtrack. In
particular, it was promoted in library music for use as background to newsreels
and documentaries. The list below gives
films which use his works. This is far
from complete, and I would be interested in hearing of more details and other
examples.
